Mulch and Bed Edging in Carrollton, GA

Mulch installation and bed edging in Carrollton, GA — fresh mulch at a proper depth and a hand-cut spade edge that gives the bed a real line.

In short: this is the highest-impact thing you can do to a yard for the money. Nothing else changes how a property looks from the road as fast as a crisp edge and fresh mulch.

The edge is what actually does the work

People think the mulch is the thing. It is the edge. A bed with a sharp, hand-cut spade edge and old mulch still reads as maintained. A bed with fresh mulch and a vague, grass-crept boundary reads as a pile of bark chips.

I cut edges with a spade rather than laying plastic or metal edging. A cut edge is a clean vertical trench between bed and lawn — it looks better, it is easy to re-cut next season, and it does not eventually work its way out of the ground and sit there crooked the way plastic edging always does.

Mulch, done right

Two to three inches, pulled back off stems and trunks. That is genuinely most of the technique. Mulch is doing three jobs: holding moisture in the soil through a Georgia summer, keeping the soil temperature steadier, and smothering weed seed before it gets going.

What it should not be doing is burying your plants. Mulch heaped up against a trunk holds water against bark that is not built to stay wet, and it gives voles a covered run right where they can chew the base of the tree. If your trees look like they are standing in little volcanoes, somebody has done that to them.

On beds that already have depth, I would usually rather break up and turn the existing mulch than dump another two inches on top. Layering fresh over old year after year is how a bed ends up six inches deep and holding water like a sponge.

Timing

Spring is when most people want it, and it is a sensible time — it goes down before the summer weed flush and before the heat, which is when the moisture retention earns its keep. Autumn is the other reasonable window, going into winter, and it pairs well withleaf removal since the beds have to be cleared out either way.

Beds as part of lawn care

Beds are part of the widerlawn care and mowing in Carrollton side of what I do, and the sensible way to buy it is as one visit withhedge trimming: shrubs cut back, bed re-edged, mulch down. That combination is the single biggest visible change you can make to a front yard in an afternoon.

Worth knowing: if a bed keeps washing out, mulch is not your problem. That is usually runoff coming over a blocked gutter above it, which is agutter cleaning job.

Mulch and bed questions

How deep should mulch be?

Two to three inches over the bed, kept back off the stems and trunks so nothing is buried.

Deeper than about three inches starts holding too much water against roots and can stop light rain reaching the soil at all. Thinner than two inches will not suppress weeds, which is most of the point.

Why should mulch not touch the trunk of a tree?

Mulch piled against a trunk holds moisture against the bark, which invites rot and gives voles a covered place to chew. Bark is not built to stay wet.

The volcano-shaped mound of mulch heaped up a tree trunk is the most common landscaping mistake in America and it slowly kills the tree it is supposed to be protecting.

When should mulch be refreshed?

Once a year for most beds, usually in spring, topping up rather than piling a fresh layer on top of the old one every time.

If there is already two or three inches down, breaking up and turning what is there is often better than adding more depth.
