What grows here, and why the calendar matters
Carrollton sits in west Georgia's Piedmont, and the lawns around here are split between warm-season grasses — Bermuda and zoysia, which green up in spring, thrive in the heat and go dormant and brown after frost — and cool-season tall fescue, which does the opposite: it grows in spring and autumn and struggles through a Georgia August.
That split is the single most useful thing to understand about maintaining a lawn here, because the two want opposite treatment at opposite times of year. Fertilising Bermuda in October or scalping fescue in July are both ways to hurt a lawn while believing you are helping it.
On timing, I go by whatUGA Extension publishes rather than by folklore — they put tall fescue seeding in the Piedmont at September 1 to October 15, at 5 to 6 pounds per 1,000 square feet.

The machine is a Scag ride XL stand-on zero-turn. It is a commercial stand-on rather than a homeowner rider, which matters mostly for speed on open ground and for turning tightly around trees and beds without tearing the turf.
What drives what it costs
I do not publish prices, because every quote I have ever seen given sight unseen has been wrong. What moves the number is straightforward and worth knowing before you call:
- Size and how open it is. An acre of clear ground can be quicker than a small yard cut into a dozen beds with a swing set and a trampoline in it. Trimming time, not mowing time, is what varies.
- Slope. A steep bank is slower and has to be handled differently.
- Tree cover. Drives leaf and gutter work, and shades turf into thin patches that need different treatment.
- Condition. A yard on a schedule is a different job from one that has not been touched in two months.
- Recurring or one-off. Regular work is more predictable for me, and I price accordingly.

September through October. UGA Extension recommends planting tall fescue between September 1 and October 15 in the Piedmont and north Georgia, which includes Carroll and Haralson counties.
Seeding earlier exposes young grass to heat stress and disease; later risks cold damage before it establishes. UGA gives a rate of 5 to 6 pounds of seed per 1,000 square feet for a new stand, and 2 to 6 pounds per 1,000 square feet when overseeding thin areas.
How short should Bermuda grass be cut in Georgia?
UGA Extension puts the recommended mowing height for hybrid Bermuda grown as a lawn at 1 to 1.5 inches.
That is lower than most homeowners expect, but it only works with frequent cutting. Letting it get tall and then taking it down to that height at once scalps the lawn and exposes the soil.
How often does a lawn need mowing in Carrollton?
Through the growing season most lawns here need cutting on a weekly basis, easing off at either end of the year as growth slows.
