Why gutters clog so badly in west Georgia

It is the trees. A lot of properties around Carroll and Haralson counties sit under mature water oaks, willow oaks and loblolly pine, and those three fill a gutter in completely different ways.

Pine straw is the sneaky one. It does not wash through — it mats into a felt layer that holds water like a sponge and stays wet long after the rain stops. Oak leaves are heavier and rot down into a black sludge that packs into the corners and the downspout elbows. On top of both, shingle grit washes off the roof and settles underneath everything, which is why a gutter that looks only half full can still be effectively blocked.

What a blocked gutter actually costs you

A gutter is not really about the gutter. Its whole job is to take a roof's worth of water and put it somewhere that is not against your foundation. When it stops doing that:

• Water sheets over the front edge and lands in a trench right at the foundation line, which is exactly where you least want it going down.
• That runoff digs channels through beds, washes mulch into the lawn and strips soil off the high side of a sloped yard. A good bit of the erosion I get called about turns out to be a gutter problem, not a grading problem.
• Standing wet debris sits against the fascia board and the drip edge. Wood that stays wet does not stay sound.
• Full gutters are heavy. Wet debris plus trapped water pulls hangers loose and puts a permanent sag in the run.
• In winter, a trough full of soaked debris is the part that freezes first and stays frozen longest.

How I do it

Debris comes out and goes with me. It does not get raked off the roof into your beds and left for you to deal with, which is the corner most commonly cut on this job.

I clear the downspouts as well as the troughs, because a spotless gutter feeding a packed elbow still backs up in the first hard rain — the blockage is very often in the elbow at the top of the drop, not in the run you can see from the ground. Then I check where the downspouts actually discharge, since dumping an entire roof at the corner of the slab causes its own set of problems.

If I get up there and find something that is not a cleaning problem — rotted fascia, a run pitched the wrong way, hangers pulled loose — I will tell you what I see and leave it there. I am a property maintenance guy, not a roofer, and I am not going to invent a problem to sell you a repair.

When to have it done

The common mistake is doing it too early. Clean gutters in October around here and you will be doing it again, because the oaks are not finished — water oaks in particular hold their leaves stubbornly and drop well into winter. Waiting until the trees are genuinely bare gets you one cleaning that lasts instead of two that do not.
