Bremen is not just Carrollton further west

First thing worth saying: Bremen is in Haralson County, not Carroll. That trips people up when they go looking for services, because a lot of outfits that say they cover "Carroll County" quietly stop at the county line, and Bremen is over it.

The town itself grew up around manufacturing rather than around a courthouse square or a college. Bremen was an apparel and textile town for generations, and it built the kind of housing that goes with that — modest homes on modest lots, laid out close together within walking distance of where people worked. That history is written into the yards I work on there.

What that means for the actual work

Smaller lots, but not faster jobs. This is the part people get wrong. A quarter-acre in an older Bremen neighbourhood usually takes longer than a much bigger lot in a new subdivision, because almost none of it is open running ground. It is cut up by mature trees, established beds, sheds, fence lines, retaining walls and driveways — so the time goes into string trimming and edging rather than mowing.

There is also more grade. The land west toward the Haralson County line rolls harder than the flatter ground east of Carrollton, and a good number of Bremen properties have a genuine bank in them somewhere. Slopes are slower, they need handling differently, and they are where I see the most erosion damage.

And there are more big hardwoods. Older streets means canopy that has had fifty or more years to mature, which drives two things: shade-thinned turf that never quite fills in, and a heavyleaf removal job compressed into a few weeks each autumn. That is the opposite of the Villa Rica pattern, where pine straw trickles down all year.

Older houses, older gutters

The same mature canopy fills the gutters, and on older housing stock the gutters have often been up there a long while. When I dogutter cleaning in Bremen I find sagging runs, pulled hangers and soft fascia more often than I do on newer construction.

I will tell you when I see it. I am not a roofer and I will not pretend to be one — but you should know before it turns into a repair rather than a maintenance job.

Being straight about Bremen

There are established lawn outfits already working Bremen, and some of them are good. I am not going to pretend the town has been waiting for me.
